Be. Here. Now.

“Wherever you are, be all there” – Jim Elliot

So I was scrolling down my Facebook page and I see that yet another one of my friends just got engaged!

As always, I got this nice warm mushy feeling inside me, as I flipped through pictures of the cute pair together (yes, I’m a sucker for real-life ‘happily ever after‘ stories). They looked so happy together! The guy had elaborately planned out her birthday, and went down on one knee with a proposal – complete with a diamond ring, beside a beautiful lake.

They had then posed for pictures, for Facebook, of course.

But wait, that’s not love! Caught off guard by the man of your dreams in a similar situation, wouldn’t Facebook be one of the last things on your mind? Would you not want to spend the next hour making promises to each other, basking in the aftermath of what just transpired? And would you not want to personally tell your family and friends before proclaiming to the world that you have found The One?

Don’t get me wrong – I’m not anti-Facebook or anti-selfie (far from it, you’ll see in the days to come) and this isn’t a rant about how social media is ruining our lives. But I just don’t understand the rush in proclaiming to the world our most private moments? What’s the hurry? Why are Facebook and Twitter on our minds at momentous moments like these? Why not wait until a little later?

And why try so hard to look happy with our significant others? If we really would have been so happy, wouldn’t Facebook be one of the last things we’d think about, at least while we are with them?

It seems that in our obsession to look happy to the rest of the world (read: Facebook friends), we have forgotten how to actually be (happy).

In 2016, I promise to be more present, in whatever I do, whoever I’m with. I promise to give more of my time and attention to real people, real situations, real events.
