Tarot Card Reading: What, Why and How it helps you

What are tarot cards and what does a Tarot card reading entail? Multiple times every week, I meet someone new who just happens to find out I am a Tarot card reader, gets excited and almost immediately wants to get a reading done, but then hesitates, unsure about what tarot cards are and how they predict the future, and how a tarot card reading can help them.

Having completed 14  years of tarot reading, I thought I must absolutely write a post now to answer some of those questions you might have as well.

Tarot card reading

What is Tarot reading?

Tarot reading is the art of divination and fortune-telling using a specialised deck of 78 cards. According to different schools of thought, Tarot cards are said to have originated in different forms in ancient Egypt, China, India or Middle East. Some people also believe they originated in Italy. However, they were first only used for “playful divination” or for playing games, especially in 14th Century Europe, when the trend became quite popular. The first ever evidence of using Tarot cards for divination is from the 18th century.

Tell me more about Tarot cards and the deck..

The deck is divided into Major Arcana cards and Minor Arcana cards. The Major Arcana cards are 22 in number (numbered I through XXII) and denote major events in life. Many of them have been popularised in literature and cinema. Surely, you’ve heard of the “Death”, the “Fool” or the “Empress” card?

Somewhat similar to a deck of cards, the modern-day Tarot deck has 4 suits of 14 each (1 through 10, Queen, King, Page and Knight). These suits are traditionally the following – Wands (denoting creativity, spirituality), Swords (denoting thoughts, ideas, actions), Cups (emotions, feelings, relationships), and Pentacles (material aspects, possessions). There are thousands of varieties of decks. While most decks have say, 7 coins drawn in  a “7 of Pentacles” (see below left), some decks have different pictures for all of them (see below right):

I personally love decks with different pictures. My all-time favorite is the Osho Zen Tarot deck.

How is Tarot different from Astrology/Palmistry?

As opposed to palmistry or astrology, Tarot is more useful for guidance (and thus, helps in taking decisions/coping when facing any difficult situation), rather than for only knowing what will happen. And you know what I like best about Tarot? As mentioned in my post How I became who I am it’s the fact that it is not fatalistic and that it gives power to the one asking the questions. Yes, you read that right!

And that brings me to my next question…

How does Tarot work?

It is believed that the cards mirror what is going on in the mind of the person picking them/ asking the question. Tarot helps me use my intuition to tune into the cards and interpret the energies of the person. To put it simply, it helps you realise what your subconscious already knows. Thus, via my cards, I help you find the answers already within you and take the right decisions. There are 78 cards and multiple cards are picked for each reading – leading to millions of permutations. Plus, each card has different layered meanings, based on the situation. Hence there are an infinite number of possibilities of what the cards can say.

Do you wear bright-colored robes and sit with a crystal ball and incense sticks?

Nope, I don’t. I’m as normal as you are 😛

Is Tarot accurate?

Yes, it is. Not my words, but words of people who’ve gotten a reading done from me. Of course, I firmly believe it’s accurate. Else, I wouldn’t be a Tarot card reader in the first place. If you are skeptical, try asking the cards something about your past. And always choose a Tarot reader you can rekate to – it’s very important to feel a mental/emotional connection with the reader.
I also believe that, like everything else in life, a lot depends on your attitude and belief. If you approach a Tarot reading with an open mind, the answers and messages will resonate with you and not only show you the right path (for you), a reading will leave you relieved and with more clarity than before. It gives me immense joy in sending off people with a smile.

I have always wanted to learn Tarot reading. And this is the most I know about Tarots now after reading your post. But my question is, if you are picking a random card from a deck, it isn’t just probability? You could pick any card right? and the probability of picking any one is equal.

    1. Glad I was able to explain concepts.
Mathematically, yes. But it is your subconscious pulling you towards particular card(s) – through your gut feeling.
If you were playing a game of luck and had to pick a door out of A and B – would you not go with what your gut says?
I have had numerous cases where a person ends up pulling the exact same cards over and over again in different sessions – that wouldn’t happen if it was plain probability. It was happening because that was the Universe’s way of telling you what’s right for you..
      Hope this helps 🙂

Your subconscious mind knows what’s best for you and leads you to the right cards – makes sense?
You can compare it to how your intuition/gut feeling guides you to something.
