I called her up from
The phone booth outside
The water seeped and wet my toes
An allusion to my thoughts
My fingers – numb as ever
I wondered how warm it’d be
In say, Manila at this time
With a rhythmic pattern I punched in
8-8-1-2-4-1-0-6
A beep, a sound and then some static
I sighed and pushed in my last penny
This time I must get through
I did but it wasn’t meant to be –
The number must be wrong,
For the woman who picked up
Said no ‘Cherie’ lived there.
I looked down and read
The number once again
And then, suddenly
With a flash it hit me –
She’d given me a false number
‘Of course, I should’ve known
Coz oh, how distracted she was
When I asked her for her number
And the way her eyes flitted
To the guy across the room
The one in the red button-down
He caught her eye, a smile they shared
And as I called her name again
She looked back to me,
Jolted back to reality
And half-heartedly, she
Drawled 8-8-1-2-4-1-0-6
Oh, I should have known
She did not like me back
‘Coz one, that guy was hot
And two?
I was just another girl.

I know it is a sad poem but it made me smile. I smiled because I liked your narration and perspective. Thanks for normalising a taboo through your poetry. #surreads #myfriendalexa #blogchatter

Lovely! The last line packed a punch!
Your poem aptly describes the state of unrequited love, gender unbiased.

Nice post. Most likely she did not like you. If you are a girl, why are you phoning her so desperately? May she does not want your friendship.

What do you mean “if you are a girl, why are you phoning her”? What does calling have to do with gender?
And it’s obvious she realized that after the wrong person picked up the phone at the other end… Unless she called, how would she know?
